Tip #32 – More Green Cleaning Ideas – 10/27/10

Replace Paper Towels

Instead of using paper towels, which are not good for our environment and can be expensive, use washcloths, old kitchen and bath towels (just cut them to size) instead of tossing them into the trash.   I use these to clean counters, tables and to wipe up messes.  Then just throw them in the washer and they’re ready to reuse.

Use Micro fiber Cloths

I love Micro fiber cloths, they trap dust and dirt which makes dusting easy and dust isn’t floating back on everything I just cleaned.  These cloths cost about $2-3 each, but they last a long time unlike packs of pretreated wipes that cost around $3-5 a pack and can only be used once.  After a cleaning or two I just toss the microfiber clothes in the washer and they’re all set to use again. They’re great to clean furniture, mirrors and floors!

Don’t overwhelm yourself trying to replace everything at once.  Choose an idea or two and soon you’ll not only be saving money but you’ll be helping to save our planet.

Watch for our next tip which will feature recipes for cleaning products you can make yourself.

Tip #31 – Go Green when you Clean – 10/14/10

Over the next few weeks we will give you tips on how to go Green in your home.  It’s easy and inexpensive.  We will have recipes for green cleaning which will make your house healthy as well as you, all while saving a bundle on cleaning products.  You can mix up your own cleaners for $.30 or less a bottle compared with the $3 price tag of the store bought brands.

Multi-purpose Cleaner

To get started mix up a bottle of multi-purpose cleaner. This can be used on all types of surfaces from kitchen counter-tops, bathroom vanities, glass doors, windows and mirrors. DO NOT use vinegar or vinegar solutions on marble. Simply mix a 50/50 solution of distilled white vinegar with water in a clean spray bottle. The odor of the vinegar will dissipate after a few minutes and it leaves no residue or lingering scent.  If you like, add essential oils to mask the vinegar smell.

This solution costs about $.30 a bottle to make (not including the bottle). You can buy a spray bottle at the Dollar Store or I just reuse ones I have already such as Windex bottles.

Tip # 30 - SAVE TIME & MONEY – 9/15/10

When you’re cooking a meal, double up so you only have to make the meal once and get to eat it 2-3 times.  This saves money because you can buy in bulk and also saves time in the kitchen.

If your family doesn’t like leftovers, make the dish and don’t cook it.  Put it in a separate pan and freeze.  Now you can have a nice health meal without all the fuss and can eat it any time within the next month or so. I do this often and it’s a great way to eat healthy and saves lots of time in the kitchen and gives me more time for the things I enjoy.  Also most meals taste better when reheating.

Tip #29 –  Save Money on Back to School Clothes - 8/17/10

Here’s a great article from Becentsable about getting great deals on back to school clothes for the kids.  I hope you get lots of great ideas and savings. Click here to read more.

Tip #28 – Half Price Sale on PGDC – 7/28/10

Purchase your Pocono Gold Discount Card now through August 15th and save $10.  Cards are good until December 31, 2010 but this a GREAT way to save now through the end of the year and try out the card.  We had a customer who told us they saved over $400 in the first 5 months of having the card.  What a great deal for only a $20 purchase.  Now you can do they same over the next 5 months and the cards are ONLY $10.

Tip #27 – Free On-Line Money Management Tool – 7/16/10

If you need some help with your budget check out Mint. This is a free online money management software. Mint will help you see where you’re spending your money and where you can cut back.  It also can help you set realistic goals.

Tip #26 – Save Energy – 7/7/10

With summer on its way here are a few tips to Save Energy in your home. Ventilate and cool your home with window or whole-house fans during the cooler hours.  A whole house ventilating fan in your attic or an upstairs window will cool the house, if the outside temperature is below 78 degrees.  To determine the size for a whole-house fan, multiply the floor area by the ceiling height.  Then multiply that number by .33.  Choose a fan that has a cubic foot per minute (cfm) rating that is equal to or greater than the final number).

Cook more efficiently.  Instead of using the stove which will not only heat up the house, it uses more electricity.  Use a crock-pot, microwave, outdoor grill and pressure cookers.

Turn off the Air Conditioner when you leave a room for more than an hour.  You can quickly cool the room later when you return.  Set your thermostat higher (75 to 78 degrees) and rely on ceiling and table fans for cooling. Set the Air Conditioner’s fan speed on high, except in very humid weather.  When it is humid, the fan speed should be set at low to remove more moisture from the air even through less air is moving through the house at any given time. Reduce humidity in bathrooms & kitchens with exhaust fans.  When dehumidifying a basement, keep basement doors and windows closed.

Tip #25 – PPL NEW Time-of-Use Option – 5/20/10

If you are a PPL customer who hasn’t switched electricity suppliers,be sure to do your home work on the new E-power Time-of-Use charge (TOU).  I went on the site to see if it would be worth enrolling in this option which began in March, yes, I’m a little behind these days.  With this option you pay a lower price during “off-peak” hours and a higher price during “Peak” hours.

I thought this would be great for us but after checking in to it, our electric bill would have gone up a little more each month.  It wasn’t much, but with the increase a few months ago we’re already paying our fair share in increases between electricity and taxes.  So please, before deciding on this option, go to www.pplelectric.com/e-powerand you’ll find information to compare your current bill with the new TOU.

Tip #24 – Recycle Ink Cartridges – 4/17/10

Bring your Used Ink Cartridges to Staples and receive $3 for each.  You can recycle up to 10 cartridges per month.  This is a great savings.  I keep mine until I have at least 6 or more a month.  Now when I get my rewards check ($18 or more) I can use it towards anything in the store and it’s like getting FREE supplies.  When I needed a new office chair I waited until I had 10 and used the $30 towards the chair to bring down the cost.  Just stop in and open up your Staples Reward account today and start saving on those old cartridges.  Plus you’re helping the environment by recycling.  It’s a Win-Win!

Tip #23 – BeCentsable Money Saving Newsletter – 3/29/10

Tip #22 - Winter Tips – 2/11/10

Lower the indoor temperature a few degrees in winter (you’ll save about 2% per degree).   Set if even lower at night and a full ten degrees lower when your on vacation.

Close the fire place damper when it’s not in use.  It you never use it seal the flue with a plastic bag stuffed with insulation.

Close off unused rooms and lower the temperatures by adjusting the registers and dampers.  You can potentially save up to $50 per year.
